The 2011 series of the South Australian Time attack has been run and dusted.
The series saw some phenomenal times laid down by the Pro Class Competitors with the other classes going hammer and tongs at each other throughout the 4 rounds.
With a large range of cars from Showroom Spec Renault’s to Out of This world 180sx Nissan’s that barely resemble the cars they once started as it was a pleasure to once again be involved with this fast growing sport.
The fastest time posted by Simon Podlewski in his 180sx of the series was a crazy fast 1.10.04 around the flat Mallala Circuit. I was lucky enough to be standing on the outside of the long right hander kink between the southern and northern hairpins as Simon executed that lap… And holy crap was it fast! The noise it made as it scraped its way along the tarmac past me, scrubbing tyres and defying the laws of physics was enough to distract me from the next car coming through.
To put this time into perspective, the V8 Supercar Lap record, held by the rather skilled Greg Murphy in one of those commodore-esque things is a 1.08.1, The Super Touring lap record held By Brad Jones in an Audi is a 1.10.3. Both these cars use full slicks, and run lap after lap to get these times. Simon’s time of 1.10.04 was a single lap flyer, on Road Tyres. No slicks, no semi slicks, no tyre warmers, a mean feat!
The outright lap record of a 1.02.6 by Paul Stokell still stands, 8 seconds away from Simon and his compatriots, but they will continue to push the boundaries and I cannot wait for them to push into the 9′s…. Closely followed by the 8′s I hope!

A big congratulations must go out to the event and series organizers of the Mitsubishi GSR/Evo Club here in South Australia. The committee does a stellar job each round and I look forward to working with them again next year to once again cover the event and provide some fantastic Photos. (Maybe I’ll find time to compete in one round and handball my job to someone else…)
